Mineola is one of a number of towns near Tyler which have become weekend destinations for people from metropolitan areas looking for a few days respite from the traffic. The venerable bed & breakfast Munzesheimer Manor serves as base-camp for many such travelers, whether attending Canton’s First Monday, shopping for antiques, or just exploring the beauty of East Texas. For the past few years, Brad & Ashlee Unger have owned and operated the inn. Their breakfasts are healthful and delicious; their pets and young son give the place a “homey” feel. The Ungers have researched the history of their home and are glad to share what they’ve learned. For travelers wanting to leave the car at home, the train depot is within walking distance (round-trip from Dallas is about $50) and Mineola is just the right size for exploring afoot. The East Texas Burger Company serves a fine half-pound burger and if you get there early enough you may be able to snag a fried pie, which they began serving here in 1896. If they’re sold out, you can saunter over to The Luscious Crumb for one of their gluten-free cupcakes.
